Gwynedd communities lead the way in lifesaving defibrillator coverage across UK

Plaid Cymru representatives for Dwyfor Meirionnydd, Liz Saville Roberts MP and Mabon ap Gwynfor MS have welcomed news that Gwynedd has been recognised as one of the top five areas in the UK for defibrillator coverage.

The Cardiac Coverage report by defibshop reveals that Gwynedd boasts an impressive 50.35 defibrillators per 10,000 people, placing it among the best-prepared regions in the UK for responding to cardiac emergencies.

Wales currently has 8,185 public defibrillators, bringing coverage to 26 defibrillators per 10,000 people.

Mrs Saville Roberts recently called on the UK government to remove VAT on defibrillators – a call backed by cross-party MPs in Parliament. Removing VAT from the sale of defibrillators would make them more affordable and bring costs down by up to £500.

Liz Saville Roberts MP said:

This recognition is a testament to the incredible commitment of people across Gwynedd who have come together to raise funds and awareness for these lifesaving devices. Since becoming involved with Calon Hearts UK in 2016, I’ve seen firsthand how vital defibrillators are in saving lives and how passionately our communities have embraced this cause. I’ve been pleased to support fundraising efforts for public defibrillators in communities across the constituency, including three community defibrillators in Llanfrothen, Rhyd, and Croesor in 2017. It is unacceptable that community groups working hard to save lives are penalised by VAT when purchasing defibrillators. These devices are not luxuries - they are essential, lifesaving equipment. I have consistently supported calls to remove VAT on defibrillators for community use, and I urge the UK Government to take this simple, practical step to improve public health.

Mabon ap Gwynfor MS said:

This is a proud moment for Gwynedd. The fact that we have such a high density of defibrillators is down to the proactive and compassionate spirit of our communities. These devices save lives, and the people of Gwynedd have shown what can be achieved when we work together for the common good. I’ve seen the incredible work done by local volunteers, schools, and organisations - often in partnership with charities to ensure that lifesaving defibrillators are available when and where they’re needed most. Every defibrillator installed, every training session delivered, is a step toward safer communities. We must continue to build on this momentum, ensuring that no one is ever too far from the help they need in a cardiac emergency. I also encourage every school, village hall, public venue, and business in Gwynedd to consider how they can help expand this vital network of emergency equipment. The recognition of Gwynedd as a UK leader in defibrillator coverage is not just a statistic, it’s a reflection of lives potentially saved. Diolch o galon to everyone that has played a part in making Gwynedd a leader in cardiac preparedness.
